展覧会コンセプト
Concept

2020年からはじまり、3回目の開催となる公募展は、「It’s Not a Cultural Showcase, but a Window to the Soul」（それは文化のショーケースではなく、心の窓）と題し、東京都心の大丸有エリア（大手町・丸の内・有楽町）に点在する5つのビルの15個のショーウィンドウを会場に、公募で集まった34名の作品を展示しました。オフィスビル等のフロアの一角にある「ショーケース」を「都市に潜在するエアポケット」と捉え直し、その空間と出会い、その出会いが作品のイメージとともに鑑賞者や出展者の記憶の一部となる——そのような、場所と記憶が連鎖（リンケージ）するような回遊型美術展を目指しました。

会期中には、作品を巡るツアーや多文化理解をテーマとしたトークイベントを開催しました。長くこの地で暮らす人々や、世界各地から集まる人々が目まぐるしく交差する国際都市を舞台に、多様で豊かな生活様式や文化背景、そこにある想いなどを知るきっかけとなり、さまざまなバックグランドをもつ人々がゆるやかにつながる場所を目指しています。

One of IMM Tokyo’s unique initiatives is the Multinational Art Exhibition, which began in 2020. This exhibition is open to people living in Japan who have roots overseas, and invites them to present their works and expressions originating from living in both their native culture and the Japanese culture in which they live their lives. Tokyo Biennale 2023 will realize this art exhibition as a multi-site experience in the Daimaruyu area (Otemachi, Marunouchi, Yurakucho) in central Tokyo.
“It’s not a cultural showcase, but a window to the soul” is the title of the exhibition. “Showcases” on the floors of office buildings and other buildings will be reconsidered as local resources in the heart of the city, and used as venues for IMM Tokyo’s publicly solicited exhibitions. We aim to create a publicly solicited exhibition that links the location to the memories of the exhibitors and the viewers, as they encounter “urban air pockets” in the city center of Tokyo and the images of the works become part of their memories. We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity to learn about the diverse and rich lifestyles, cultural backgrounds, and thoughts of the residents of this cosmopolitan city, where people who have lived here for a long time and people from all over the world gather at a dizzying intersection, and that it will become a place where people with various backgrounds can loosely connect with each other.

異質の文化や立場を理解するために、視覚芸術というメディアがどのように機能するのかをテーマに、日本に住むクルド難民の家族を描いた映画「マイスモールランド」の監督・川和田恵真さんとIMM東京を主宰する岩井成昭によるトークイベントを行いました。
様々なルーツをもつ人たちと生きる社会を描き出す川和田監督。本作品の背景やそこに込められた思い、鑑賞者へどのようなメッセージとして届いたのかを、岩井との対談を通してお聞きます。トーク後半では、映画や美術といった視覚表現が背景の異なる人たちをつなぐためにどのような役割を果たせるのか／果たせないのか、客席を交えて議論しました。

Talk｜The Role of Visual Arts in Multicultural Understanding

A talk on the theme of how the medium of visual arts functions to understand different cultures and positions was held by Emma Kawawada, director of “My Small Land,” a film about a family of Kurdish refugees living in Japan, and Shigeaki Iwai, director of IMM Tokyo.

Director Kawawada depicts a society where people live with people of various origins. Through a conversation between Kawawada and  Iwai, they talked about not only the background of this film,but also their thoughts behind it, and what kind of message it delivered to the viewers. In the latter half of the talk, the audience discussed what role visual expression, such as film and art, can and cannot play in connecting people with different backgrounds.

在留外国人の生活や存在を、日本社会の中で「可視化する」ことも目的の一つとして活動しているIMM東京。主宰者の岩井成昭、出展アーティスト、鑑賞者が展⽰会場を巡りながら、⼤丸有という都心エリアでリンケージを考える鑑賞ツアーを行うことで、作者と鑑賞者の文化背景を共有する場として開かれることを願い実施しました。

IMM Tokyo aims to make the lives and presence of people living in Japan with roots overseas and “visible” in Japanese society. The director of IMM Tokyo, Shigeaki Iwai, the exhibiting artists, and the viewers tour the exhibition halls and think about linkages in the central Tokyo area of Daimaru-Yu, with the hope that the exhibition will be a place where the cultural backgrounds of the artists and the viewers can be shared.
