Art Education Program

We planned art education programs for elementary school students in Adachi City to learn about cultural diversity through art. In the fiscal 2022, the second year of implementing these programs, we continued our cooperation with Adachi Ward from the fiscal year 2021 and realized this program over a total of 7 days at 4 elementary schools in areas where the resident population was becoming more multinational.
This program had three purposes. The first purpose was to deepen an understanding of cultural diversity. The second was to experience cultural diversity. The third was to become aware of others different from oneself while building even more self-awareness. With these goals in mind, we implemented our program with the following configuration: (1) preliminary lectures using the body; (2) dialogue-based artwork appreciation led by art communicators; (3) art workshops by artists with roots overseas; and (4) creative workshops for reflecting on the previous three kinds of activities. We carried out these activities flexibly in consultation with school teachers, with some schools implementing only activities 2 and 3, for example.
This program was made possible following local research and meetings with numerous people of varied backgrounds, including IMM Tokyo office staff, art communicators, artists with roots overseas who study at Tokyo University of the Arts, citizen researchers from “IMM Neighbors,” staff from Adachi City, and teachers at participating schools.

Further details about these programs can be found in the “report” section.

Chloe Paré
Chloe Paré (b. 1996, Athens) is an artist and researcher. Through workshops, installations, and art books she explores the materiality and intra-activity of visual arts. Her artworks often gravitate towards paper as a medium due to its lightness, accessibility, and transformability. She has realized numerous artistic workshops and solo installations in collaboration with art spaces, schools, and healthcare facilities and has been part of several research programs and residencies in Greece, Germany, and Japan. Paré is currently doing her Ph.D. research in the department of Global Arts, Art Studies and Curatorial Practices of Tokyo University of the Arts under the MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship.

Sepideh Hashemi is an Iranian artist based in Japan. She did her B.A. and M.A. in photography in Iran. She is very interested in documentary photography. After receiving a grant in 2017, she moved to Japan and started a research period under the supervision of Prof. Katsuhiko Hibino; within that year, she participated in some of his social projects, such as Turn Fes 5 and Art meets Sport, which gave her a goal of connecting art to everyday life. After that, she entered the Global Art Practice in 2019; within this program, she had the opportunity to experience exploring mediums other than photography. She also did a residency program in Paris, then. Now she is a second-year Ph.D. student in Global Arts under the supervision of Prof. Yoshitaka Mori, researching the influence of bodies in artists’ works or artwork as a self-portrait.
