豊島区民センター、エントランス・ホールに設営されたテント・ギャラリー Tent gallery set up in the entrance hall of Toshima Civic Center

IMMとNPO法人 芸術家と子どもたちがコラボレーションし、池袋・要町エリアに集住するネパールやインドにルーツをもつ子どもたちを対象にしたワークショップをプ実施しました。ワークショップのファシリテーターに海外にルーツをもつ4名のアーティストをむかえ、子どもたちと協働制作した作品を展覧会「家族をつなぐもの」にて紹介しました。

IMM collaborated with NPO Children Meet Artists (CMA) to conduct workshops for children with Nepalese and Indian roots living in the Ikebukuro-Kanamecho area. The workshops were facilitated by four artists with overseas roots, and the works co-created with the children were presented in the exhibition “What Connects Families”.

鑑賞者は、4つのワークショップに与えられたシンボルカラーのリボンを選びテントの外観を装飾した

Visitors were asked to choose one of the ribbons in the symbolic color of each of the four workshops to decorate the tent.　Visitors selected ribbons in the symbolic colors assigned to the four workshops, then decorated the exterior of the tents.

2001年に設立されたNPO法人 芸術家と子どもたち（以下、芸子）は、義務教育の現場から生まれた要望に応えてアーティストのワークショップをマッチング・運営するプロジェクト「ASIAS（Artist’s Studio In A School）」を立ち上げた先駆的な団体として知られています。現在、同様の活動は全国で一般的に行われていますが、芸子は常に先見の明を持ち、変化する教育現場からの要望に応えるコンテンツを、アーティストと共に毎年開発しています。

芸子が拠点を置く豊島区は、2024年現在、約3万3000人の外国人住民が居住し、外国人人口比率は11.2%と、東京23区の中で2番目に高い水準となっています。芸子はこれまでも、豊島区で活動する海外ルーツを持つ子どもたちを支援する団体と協働してきました。IMM主宰の岩井は、芸子設立当初からアーティストとしてワークショップを共に開発してきましたが、今回初めて、IMMの活動として芸子とのコラボレーションが実現しました。

Founded in 2001, NPO Children Meet Artists (CMA) is known as a pioneering organization that launched the project “ASIAS (Artist’s Studio In A School),” which matches and runs artist-led workshops according to the needs of each class in compulsory education. Although such activities are now common throughout the country, CMA has the foresight to continue to develop content that meets the needs of various educational settings every year together with artists. As of 2024, Toshima Ward, where CMA is based, is home to approximately 33,000 foreign residents, and the foreign population ratio is 11.2%, the second highest among Tokyo’s 23 wards. CMA has previously collaborated with organizations that support children with overseas roots in Toshima Ward. IMM Director Iwai has been developing workshops as an artist since CMA was founded, but this is the first time he has collaborated with CMA as IMM’s director.

今回、ワークショップの基本アイディアは、IMMが2020年から開催している公募展の常連出展アーティストを中心にした4名によるものです。4名のアーティストはそれぞれ独自の構想を持ち寄り、IMMや芸子のスタッフと打ち合わせを重ね、参加を予定している子どもたちの状況に合わせたワークショップを作りあげました。

本年1月から始まった4人のアーティストによる４つのワークショップは、それぞれ丁寧な自己紹介から始まりましたが、その中で4人に共通していたのは、異国における生活の中で感じるアイデンティティの揺らぎでした。これはそのまま海外ルーツを持つ子どもたちの現在とつながり、少なからず彼らの思いを代弁するものであったようです。

今後のIMMの活動を考えるとき、今回の実験的なワークショップはとても重要な意味を持つと思います。公募展参加者というコミュニティーを育てていきながら、そこに集う人々がそれぞれの文化背景を相互交換すること。そこには、多くの可能性が潜在していることが、今後のIMMの活動を通して、少しずつ明らかになっていくはずです。

The basic idea for this workshop came from four artists who have been regular exhibitors at the open exhibition that IMM has been holding since 2020. Each of the four artists brought their own ideas and, after repeated meetings with IMM and CMA staff, created a workshop that was tailored to the situation of the children who were expected to participate.

The four workshops by the four artists, which began in January this year, began with a careful self-introduction. What the four had in common was the fluctuation in identity felt while living in a foreign country. This directly connected to the current situation of children with overseas roots and seemed to speak for their thoughts.

When considering future IMM activities, I believe this experimental workshop will have a very important meaning. It will foster a community of participants in the open exhibition and allow the people who gather there to exchange their cultural backgrounds. There is a lot of potential there, which I believe will become clear little by little through IMM’s future activities.
